The first battle in the Learn menu of Pokémon Play It!, also known as the Machop stage (Basic stage 1) in the Play menu of Pokémon Play It! Version 2, is a short Trading Card Game battle between the player and Julie.

Gameplay

At the beginning, the player has a Machop as their Active Pokémon, and their opponent Julie has a Staryu as her Active Pokémon.

The cards on the player's hand depend on the game:

In the first game, there is no indication of how many Prize cards are needed to win, even though the game ends when the player knocks out a single Pokémon. In the second game only, each player has a single Prize card visible at the playing field. Additionally, in the second game only, the number of cards remaining in the deck is displayed as well.

In this stage, the three buttons to control Julie's speech (in the second game only) are deactivated. These buttons are gray in this stage (unlike some other stages, where the buttons would be red, yellow, and green) and don't do anything when clicked.

Before the game begins, Julie explains the playing field, the player's hand, and the Active Pokémon.

Julie's first turn

Julie draws a card, and then attaches a Water Energy on Staryu. The player is required to place the cursor on the Staryu card to check it. This causes a larger version of the card to appear at the right side, as well as the name of its single attack, "Slap". Julie's Staryu uses Slap, dealing 20 damage to the player's Machop (it started with 50 HP, therefore it has 30 HP left). Julie proceeds to explain to the player about the damage counters and how to knock out a Pokémon.

Player's first turn

The player draws another Fighting Energy card. Once this is done, the player's hand would be one of these:

  • 1 Grass Energy and 6 Fighting Energy cards (in the first game)
  • 7 Fighting Energy cards (in the second game)

Julie instructs the player to attach an Energy card to Machop. In the first game only, if the player tries to attach the Grass Energy to Machop, Julie will say that it doesn't help; the Grass Energy will return to the player's hand, and the player will have the chance to try again.

Once the player attaches a Fighting Energy card to Machop, Julie tells the player to attack with Low Kick. This attack deals 20 damage to Julie's Staryu (it started with 40 HP, therefore it has 20 HP left). Julie also mentions that some Pokémon have more than one attack (even though both Machop and Staryu have only one attack each).

Julie's second turn

Julie draws a card. She remarks that this card didn't help (without revealing what card it is), because she needed a Potion. Julie's Staryu uses Slap again, dealing another 20 damage on the player's Machop (leaving it with 10 HP).

Player's second turn

The player draws another Fighting Energy card (as a result, starting with the same cards in their hand as the previous turn, since one Fighting Energy card was already attached to Machop).

Machop already has one Fighting Energy attached, which is enough to use its only attack, the Low Kick. The player may simply attack without attaching any additional Energy cards. However, the player is free to attach the Grass Energy (in the first game only) or another Fighting Energy card to Machop if they want, though this won't help.

Once the player's Machop uses Low Kick, Julie's Staryu is knocked out.

  • In the first game, there is no mention of Prize cards in this stage, and the player simply wins by knocking Staryu out.
  • In the second game, once Staryu is knocked out, Julie asks the player to take a Prize card; once this is done, the player wins the game. The Prize card is revealed to be Machoke, though it won't be used in this game as the player has already won.

In both games, Julie mentions that in a "real" game, the player would need to knock out 3 Pokémon. She also remarks that this victory didn't count because it was just practice.
