I'm going to amend one of my suggestions. I'm having second thoughts about cosplaying. I'm not sure it would convey the right message. It might say "I have no life" to people you meet on the street. Cosplaying is ok in a con, but outside it might be seen as weird. You'll have to decide if you're comfortable cosplaying.Instead, wear whatever you have that says Pokemon. A hat, shirt, sweatshirt, accessories, etc. If that's too much, then wear something comfortable, tasteful and modest. Above all, remember nothing will scare away a parent escorting his or her kid to the Toys R Us event faster than being approached by someone with tattoos, piercings, bare midriffs and tacky clothing.
ALWAYS be cheerful, friendly and approachable. Do not be pushy...EVER! NEVER complain if people say or do something nasty. However, if somebody from Toys R Us comes out to chase you away, stand firm and let them know you are exercising your legal rights while standing on the public sidewalk.
Be ready to answer any questions, but don't go assigning blame to anyone. We don't know who's to blame either.
Remember, you are selling something to people who probably don't know the VAs have been changed. You are the face of SOVA to the outside world. Make a positive impression.
Now for the fly in the ointment: Most people will drive to the event. They will park on Toys R Us property and they will walk from their car to the store entrance and never step on the public sidewalk.
So, how do you approach them?
You could shout at them from the sidewalk, but they'll probably ignore you or more likely, hurry to get into the store. Your only choice is to be on Toys R Us property for however long the store will let you be there. You could ask for permission from the store's manager, but the odds are you will be denied and they will be forewarned.
I don't have a good solution to this problem. Then again, I've run into so many panhandlers and people asking for contributions to whatever cause they're pushing after parking my car outside the supermarket, I think most retail business establishments don't even notice them unless they commit a crime.
Gee, isn't that a nice image! SOVA supporters mixed in with panhandlers, people saying their car ran out of gas while going to a job interview, people who will wash your car's windows for your pocket change, and Krishnas. Well, whatever it takes.
At worst, you'll be told to leave the property. Do so or they'll call the cops.
Now for the second fly on the ointment: Most people entering the store won't be there for the Pokemon event. You don't want to hand out flyers to people with no interest in Pokemon.
This one is actually easy to handle. Just ask politely if they are Pokemon fans and/or there to get their Mew. If they say yes, turn on your most ingratiating personality because you've just been invited to make your pitch.
