Spider Web (Japanese: クモのす Spider Web) is a non-damaging Bug-type move introduced in Generation II. Prior to Generation V, it was the signature move of Spinarak and Ariados.
Effect
Generation II
Spider Web prevents the target from switching out or fleeing (including via Teleport). It bypasses accuracy checks to always hit, unless the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Dig or Fly. Spider Web's effect only applies as long as the Pokémon that used it remains in battle.
It will hit the target even if it has used Protect or Detect.
The affected Pokémon can still switch out via Baton Pass, but in that case, the Pokémon that switches in will now be affected. Conversely, the Pokémon that used Spider Web can switch out with Baton Pass and the effects of Spider Web will still apply. Also, if the affected Pokémon is Roared at or hit with a Whirlwind, they will still be switched out.
If a wild Pokémon uses Spider Web on the player's Pokémon, the player will be unable to escape.
Generations III and IV
Pokémon affected by Spider Web can escape (but not switch out) if the Pokémon has the Ability Run Away or is holding a Smoke Ball.
It is now blocked by Protect and Detect.
Pokémon affected by Spider Web can now switch out with U-turn.
Spider Web can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points if String Shot was used in the previous turn.
Generation V
If a Pokémon traps a target with Spider Web and then switches with Baton Pass the target will no longer be trapped. Pokémon affected by Spider Web can switch out with Volt Switch. Also, Dragon Tail and Circle Throw will force the affected Pokémon to switch out.
Generations VI and VII
Spider Web no longer affects Ghost-type Pokémon. It will now hit the target even if it has used Protect, Detect, or Spiky Shield, but will fail if the target is protected by Crafty Shield.
Pokémon affected by Spider Web can also switch out with Parting Shot.
Spider Web can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, giving the user an extra three appeal points if String Shot was used in the prior turn. It can also be used to start a combination, causing certain moves (Explosion, Memento, Perish Song and Self-Destruct) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.
If powered up by a Buginium Z into Z-Spider Web, the user's Defense stat rises by one stage.
Generation VIII onwards
Spider Web cannot be selected in a battle.

Spider Web targets the enemy in front and inflicts the stuck status condition (previously Leg HoldRB and Shadow HoldTDSBSL). This status prevents the Pokémon from moving (but may attack) and unable to switch places with the team leader. From Super Mystery Dungeon onward, Ghost-type Pokémon cannot become stuck. This move is affected by Magic Coat.
Pokémon Rumble Rush
Pokémon Rumble Rush, all status moves including Spider Web could only be used by opposing Pokémon and could not be obtained on any caught Pokémon. Spider Web could be seen as a move used by Boss Ariados.

Trivia
- In Generation III, the status screen erroneously states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it ignores accuracy and evasion checks.
- Since Generation VIII, it is the only one of Mean Look's variants that cannot be used in a battle.
